What is psychology?

Treatment with a psychologist is a collaborative process using non-drug strategies to manage various symptoms. These may include:
mood problems i.e. depression
behavioural issues i.e. unhelpful habits
thought difficulties i.e. repetitive distressing thoughts
physiological symptoms i.e. insomnia, panic attacks, phobias

Children, adolescents and adults can all benefit from seeing a psychologist.
Psychologists use evidence-based techniques that are typically short-term (6 to 10 sessions). These may include:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Mindfulness skills
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT)
Couples therapy/family therapy

Longer term therapy options may include trauma focussed therapies including Schema Therapy

Research indicates that CBT and IPT in particular are associated with long-term improvement in symptoms, and involve learning practical and effective strategies to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
The duration of a usual psychology session is
50 minutes (individual) or
90 minutes (couples)

Longer or shorter sessions, and after hours appointments, may be available by arrangement.
